The system of bullet journal is very flexible. You can use any kind of notebook to start journalling.

For me, I feel like I should not spend so much money on pretty notebooks like the old ones I used to have.

It is about the productivity, organisation and mindfulness that you practise matter; not the kind of notebooks that are expensive.
